National Home Warranty Program was a privately held for-profit brokerage offering new home warranty coverage. In 2008, National was acquired by Aviva Canada Inc., one of the leading property and casualty insurance groups in Canada. Joining the strengths of both companies will allow for a broader array of products to better serve all of our builder clients.
National is the leading warranty provider in Western Canada serving the residential construction industry in all four provinces. And National was the first warranty provider approved by CMHC to operate in all provinces of Canada.
Currently, National has more than 3,500 registered builders on the program and this year the company will provide new home warranty coverage for more than 27,000 homes and condominium units in Western Canada.
National has offices in Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Kelowna, Vancouver, and Cloverdale. Today, the company employs approximately 150 people.
In each market National serves, the company competes with other warranty providers to meet the needs of builders and homeowners. In British Columbia, the competition comes from two other for-profit insurance companies and one insurance broker representing a separate insurance company. In the other three provinces, National must compete against not-for-profit cooperatives that enjoy special tax privileges and are not required to meet the rigorous scrutiny standards normally expected of insurance companies and warranty providers
National began working with select homebuilders in northern Alberta in 1990 when a small group of builders, dissatisfied with the builder-run warranty program, sought an independent third party provider to meet the warranty needs of their customers. Since that time, National has grown every year. Ten years ago, National entered the BC marketplace at the request of builders seeking an alternative to that provincial builder-run warranty program. When the BC builder-run program went bankrupt, National was there to provide 'replacement warranty' coverage for builders and consumers.
Today, National has about 45% of the new home warranty market in British Columbia and approximately 65% of the market in Manitoba. In Alberta, National serves approximately 25% of the market for new home and condo warranties.
